Number of images"You can add a maximum of 250 images, 3D models, or videos to a product." No minimum is stated for the online store. sourceRequired
Variant images"you can only add one image to each product variant." "Product variants don't support other types of media, such as 3D models or videos." For more images per option (for example metal or stone), add them to the product media gallery in order. The Combined Listings app is on Shopify Plus and Enterprise plans only. sourceRequired

File types (Uploading images page)Supported: "JPEG, Progressive JPEG, PNG, GIF, HEIC, WebP". "Other file types such as TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) and BMP (Bitmap) are accepted but will be converted to JPEG/PNG on upload." Use JPEG for "products, banners or slideshows, pages and blog posts" and PNG for "logos, icons, borders and trims". sourceRecommended
Web file weight"aim for no larger than 200 KB, with lower numbers being better." Don't over-compress, because it "could cause your image to become blotchy." sourceRecommended
Color profile"When images are uploaded to Shopify, their color profile is removed." "When an uploaded image doesn't include a color profile, sRGB ... is assumed by the web browser." Shopify recommends removing the color profile before uploading (Photoshop/Illustrator: Edit > Assign Profile > "Don't Color Manage This Document"). sourceRecommended
Aspect ratio (consistency)"use a consistent aspect ratio ... for all the images that you add as your featured" (main) images. Media editor: "Using a consistent aspect ratio for all the images of a particular type makes them display better side by side, because they all display as the same size." sourceRecommended
Aspect ratio (crop, don't resize)To change proportions, crop rather than resize: resizing "can distort your image" when the aspect-ratio lock is off. sourceRecommended

AI-edited and rendered images on Shopify

Shopify has no rule against AI-generated or AI-edited images on your own store, and ships its own AI tools for background replacement, image generation and outpainting. Its guidance is to review AI output for errors, because the images still have to represent what you sell.

Whatever a marketplace allows, buyers return jewelry that does not match its photos. Start from a real photo of the actual piece, keep the metal, stones and size accurate, and use editing for the background, lighting and presentation.
