Watch size chart

For a 6.5 to 7 inch (16.5 to 17.8 cm) wrist, a watch case of about 38 to 42 mm usually looks right. Wrists under 6 inches suit 34 to 36 mm, and wrists of 7.5 inches or more can carry 42 to 46 mm. Men's watches typically run 38 to 46 mm, with 42 mm the most popular, and women's 26 to 36 mm. Lug-to-lug length matters as much as diameter: the lugs should not overhang your wrist.

How to measure

  1. 1

    Measure your wrist

Wrap a soft tape or a strip of paper around the wrist where you wear a watch, just above the wrist bone, and read the length in inches or centimetres.

  2. 2

    Find your case range

Read your wrist size across the chart to the recommended case diameter. A rough rule of thumb: the case diameter is about one fifth of your wrist circumference, so a 17 cm wrist points to about 40 mm.

  3. 3

    Check lug-to-lug

On the watch's spec sheet, find the lug-to-lug length. It should stay within the flat top of your wrist; on a wrist under 6.5 inches, keep it under about 45 mm.

  4. 4

    Use the circles

Print this page at 100% scale, check the 50 mm bar, cut out a circle and hold it on your wrist to see the case size before you buy.

Flat and round wrists wear watches differently

Two 6.5 inch wrists can wear the same watch differently: a flat, wide wrist gives the lugs more room than a round one. That is why lug-to-lug length, case thickness and the band all matter alongside the diameter, and why the recommended ranges overlap.

Frequently asked questions

Most guidance puts a 7 inch (17.8 cm) wrist at about 38 to 42 mm. Whether a 42 mm watch works depends on its lug-to-lug length and thickness.

42 mm. Men's watches typically range from 38 to 46 mm.

Women's watches typically range from 26 to 36 mm.

No, 40 mm sits in the medium band (about 38 to 42 mm) and suits wrists of roughly 6.5 to 7.5 inches.

The distance from the tip of the top lugs to the tip of the bottom lugs. It should not exceed the width of your wrist, and it decides fit more than the case diameter does.
