Focus Stacking
Focus stacking is a photographic technique that combines multiple images shot at different focus distances into a single frame in which the entire subject is sharp from front to back.
When a camera photographs a small object up close, only a thin slice of the scene can be in focus at once — a limitation known as shallow depth of field. Focus stacking overcomes it by capturing a series of frames, each focused a little deeper, and merging the sharpest parts of each.
How it works
- Shoot a sequence of frames, shifting focus slightly between each.
- Software analyzes every frame and selects the in-focus regions.
- Those sharp regions are blended into one composite image.
- The result shows the whole subject crisply, front to back.
Why it matters for jewelry
Rings, prongs, and gemstones have depth that a single macro exposure cannot render sharp all at once. Focus stacking keeps a stone's table, the setting, and the band all in clear focus, which is essential for showing craftsmanship and detail in catalog photography.
How Hues AI applies this
Hues AI produces images with the edge-to-edge sharpness that focus stacking traditionally required, delivering clean, fully detailed jewelry shots without the multi-frame capture-and-merge workflow.
