Gauge to mm and inches

Gauge is the American Wire Gauge (AWG), a wire-thickness standard. Body jewelry sellers round it to the millimeter sizes in the second column, so jewelry sold as 00g is about 10 mm even though 00 AWG is 9.27 mm.

How to measure

  1. 1

Measure the part that goes through the piercing

Gauge is the thickness of the post, ring or plug where it passes through your ear. Measure it across with a caliper, or lay it on the printed circles.

  2. 2

Use the chart at actual size

Print this page at 100% scale and check the 50 mm bar with a ruler before comparing jewelry with the circles.

  3. 3

Check the millimeter size on every listing

Brands round gauge sizes differently, so the millimeter figure is the safer number to match. A professional piercer can measure your current size if you are not sure.

Why 00 gauge can mean 9.3 mm or 10 mm

Gauge numbers come from the American Wire Gauge, which sets 00 AWG at 9.27 mm and 0 AWG at 8.25 mm. Body jewelry is sold in rounded metric sizes instead: 00g is listed as 10 mm and 0g as 8 mm. Most of Europe sizes body jewelry in millimeters, while US shops use gauge numbers, so the same piece can carry both labels.
